Caelum Blue's Avatar Episode Timeline

Disclaimer: I do not own the television series Avatar: The Last Airbender. It belongs to its creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino.
I also do not claim that this is in any way an OFFICIAL timeline of the Avatar series. It is merely a piece of fanwork, nothing more. I'm sharing it so other fans can use and enjoy it. If you do use it, credit would be greatly appreciated.
Speaking of appreciation, I'd like to give an inordinate amount of thanks to my friend and beta, Stingrae, for her support, suggestions, editing skills, and being the levelheaded one when I was sleep-deprived and going insane over details. I owe her cookies. Lots and lots of cookies.

Notes and references are at the bottom if you're curious as to how I arrived at this jumble of conclusions. I reserve the right to make changes to this calendar as the need arises. (And it probably will arise at some point...)

Notes

I'll be frank. This thing is far from perfect. I'm not an expert; just a fan who wanted to make sense of the Avatarverse's timeline. I've done the best I can to make sure it works out, though I know there are probably still a million things wrong with it. If you see any major problems that I've missed, please point them out to me!

Liberal Interpretation

In order for this calendar to work, certain things that are said or shown in the series need to be ignored or reinterpreted for the sake of sanity and logic.
The biggest change I've made is the timing of Sozin's Comet. Roku tells Aang that the comet would return by summer's end, but as the Day of Black Sun takes place on the first day of autumn, that doesn't work out. Ideally, I would have liked the eighth month to have taken place during the summer, but that would have screwed up the timing of the episodes from The Avatar and the Fire Lord to Day of Black Sun (check out the notes on the months below for details). I've decided that the comet came sometime during the fall, before the autumnal equinox.

Time Measurements

One week is ten days. One month is three weeks. Thirty days make up one lunar cycle.
Several times in the series, characters have used the terms "week". I'm assuming they mean our 7-day cycle, not their own 10-day cycle--otherwise certain time skips would take far too long. If a character says "three weeks" (21 days), they actually mean "two weeks" (20 days). However, had they simply said "two weeks", the audience would have interpreted it as 14 days.

The Year

Thanks to the calendar dial in Wan Shi Tong's library, we know that the year the war ended was the Year of the Monkey. Katara and Sokka would have found Aang during the Year of the Ram.
Also on the calendar dial, we can see what appear to be era names. The current era is Superior Military.

The Months

Months are named after the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, which are also associated with specific months in our world.
Traditionally, the Rat is the first animal in the zodiac. The first month of the year, however, is the Month of the Ox. I wanted the Rat (associated with the second month of winter) to be the first, but that would have caused the summer solstice and the Day of Black Sun to be far too close to each other, with practically no time for The Runaway, The Puppetmaster, and Nightmares and Daydreams to happen in between. (Especially The Puppetmaster, as that episode requires a full moon.) The Chinese calendar itself starts in spring with the Month of the Tiger, but starting the Avatarverse calendar there would cause the Day of Black Sun to take place near the middle of autumn instead of the season's beginning. I decided it wouldn't hurt to just split the difference and start the year with the Month of the Ox.

Moon Phases

Months begin the day after a full moon. The new moon marks the middle of the month. Seasons will always begin at the beginning of the month, with the full moon, and solstices and equinoxes will always occur in the middle of the month, with the new moon.

Full Moon

The moon phase in certain episodes needs to be ignored. The animators often added a full moon to nighttime landscape shots. The number of times a full moon is seen and the time in between those shots can be very unrealistic. For instance, there were at least six episodes that showed a full moon in Book 3, (The Awakening, Sokka's Master, The Avatar and the Fire Lord, The Puppetmaster, The Southern Raiders, The Ember Island Players), which would mean the entire third season lasted half a year. I've decided that some of these might be near-full moons, such as the one shown in The Ember Island Players, which would have been just a few days after the full moon in The Southern Raiders. Other full moons, however, need to be completely ignored.
I have not tampered with full moons that central to an episode's plot (i.e. The Siege of the North, The Puppetmaster).

Seasons

In the Chinese calendar, solstices and equinoxes mark the middle of their respective seasons, not the beginning. This is also the case in the Avatarverse.
During the series, two solstices occur--the winter solstice in Book 1 (The Spirit World and Avatar Roku), and the summer solstice in Book 3 (The Avatar and the Fire Lord). However, the timing of when these dates happen in their seasons does not match up. The winter solstice seems to mark the start of winter, while the summer solstice appears to happen in the middle of summer. Since both dates need to happen at the same time--either at the beginning or middle of the season--one of them needs to be changed.
If the solstices marked the beginning of their seasons, things work out better for Book 1, as the Gaang would have plenty of time to reach the North Pole. But that would also mean that the summer solstice would mark the beginning of summer, which would mean the first half of Book 3 takes place in spring, not summer. And if half of Book 3 takes place during spring, that gives even less time for Book 2 to happen, not to mention Aang's few weeks of unconsciousness between the two.
If the solstices mark the middle of the seasons, Book 3's timing makes more sense, but the Gaang has less time to get to the Northern Water Tribe in Book 1.
To simplify the situation, I've decided that solstices mark the middle of their seasons, and the winter solstice in Book 1 is not the actual solstice, but rather the start of winter. This gives the Gaang plenty of time to get to the North Pole and helps the timing of Book 3 work out better.

Hemispheres and Geographical Issues

There are a number of issues with the hemispheres, and Mike and Bryan admit it. In the first episode, Sokka mentions "midnight sun madness", and the sun never sets, so apparently it's near the middle of summer in the southern hemisphere. However, that would also mean that it's already near the middle of winter in the northern hemisphere, so...the entire timeline is screwy.
Furthermore, there are other geographical issues--Kyoshi Island, for instance, is in the southern hemisphere, where it is apparently summertime, yet there is snow on the ground. Omashu is near the equator, yet there's snow there, too. (You could maybe say this is because they're high up in the mountains. But still.) By Book 2, the southern hemisphere should be going into autumn, yet Gaoling--Toph's hometown--and the area where The Chase takes place are both experiencing spring. Aang even specifically says so at the beginning of The Chase.
Frankly, it's probably for the best if we just ignore the geographic and hemispheric issues within the series before our brains explode. Even Mike and Bryan say so.

Episodes where interpretational liberties have been taken

Book 1
The Winter Solstice, Parts 1 & 2 (The Spirit World and Avatar Roku) (10th month, days 29-30, 11th month, day 1)

When the leader of Senlin Village claims the winter solstice is approaching, assume he actually means Lidong, the Start of Winter, and not the actual winter solstice, or Dongzhi. Otherwise the timeframe for the rest of the show's first season is impossibly cramped.

Part 1 of the Winter Solstice episodes ends on a waxing crescent moon. Part 2--presumably beginning less than an hour after the end of Part 1--opens on a full moon. This is absolutely illogical and can probably be chalked up to really bad editing. Assume the crescent moon never happened and that it was a full moon the entire time, as the last day of autumn starts on a full moon.

Book 2
Return to Omashu (1st month, days 19-21)

A full or near-full moon is shown, when it ought to be a waxing crescent.

Special Note: Zuko Alone (1st month, days 29-30)

It's possible to approximate the dates of the beginning and end of Iroh's Siege of Ba Sing Se, Lu Ten and Azulon's deaths, Ursa's banishment, and Ozai's coronation.

Assuming that baby turtleducks hatch in early to mid-spring, Zuko's flashbacks can be dated to either the 3rd or 4th month. Assume the flashbacks took place over several weeks, starting in the 3rd month with Zuko and Ursa feeding turtleducks and Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee playing, and ending in the 4th month with Ursa's disappearance and Ozai's coronation.

In the series, it takes about a month (30 days) for Azula and Zuko's ship to travel from Ba Sing Se to the Fire Nation capital (in The Awakening). Assuming it takes a messenger hawk half that time (15 days) to travel the same distance, Iroh's defeat, Lu Ten's death, and the Siege's end can be dated to early in the 3rd month. The news would have reached the Fire Nation at the end of the month, meaning that Azulon would be dead, Ursa would be gone, and Ozai would be Fire Lord by the 4th month.

Furthermore, once you've chosen the date marking the end of the Siege, you can then count backwards 600 days (or 20 months) to find it's beginning--probably some time in the 7th month.

The Chase (2nd month, days 1-2)

During one scene when Appa is flying away, a large moon is shown, half-obscured by some clouds. It's near-full, and presumably a waning gibbous, as the full moon would have occurred on the night of the 30th.

The Serpent's Pass (3rd month, days 9-10)

The moon shown when Sokka and Suki nearly kiss could be interpreted as either a waning gibbous or crescent. Assume it is a crescent--this gives Appa more time to escape from the circus and fly over the Serpent's Pass at the same time the Gaang is there.

City of Walls and Secrets (3rd month, days 11-30)

Assume the Gaang spent the night after The Drill at the Outer Wall barracks. Also assume the Gaang spent a few weeks searching for Appa before the Earth King threw Bosco's party.

Tales of Ba Sing Se (3rd month, days 12-30, 4th month, days 1-16)

Frankly, the Tales could have happened at any time and in any order during the time the Gaang, Iroh, and Zuko spend in Ba Sing Se, most of which was during the last half of the 3rd month and first half of the 4th month.

Assume the Tale of Momo happened fairly early on to account for Appa's fur and footprint still being around.

Remember that the Tale of Iroh also marks Lu Ten's birthday.

The Guru (4th month, day 20)

While talking strategy with Katara, General How says that the eclipse will happen in exactly two months. Assume he meant three--the timing of Season 3 will work out better. Especially seeing as Aang will be unconscious for about a month.

Book 3
The Awakening (5th month, days 21-29)

Assume the entire episode takes place over 8 days, and that certain scenes happened in a different order than the show presented. For instance, the Maiko kiss happened during a full moon, which would have had to have been long before Aang woke up.

Also assume that the moon is near-full, as opposed to completely full. This allows a little more time for the next four episodes to happen before the summer solstice.

Sokka's Master (6th month, days 7-10)

In the show, Sokka has a single day of training before making his own sword that night and then leaving the next day. This is preposterous. Assume the episode takes place over several days, which is slightly less preposterous.

Also, ignore the shot of the full moon when Piandao is watching Sokka forge his sword. It should be closer to a waning crescent.

The Avatar and the Fire Lord (6th month, day 16)

When Roku tells Aang to meet him on the solstice, he honestly does mean the solstice. The middle of summer, not the start.

Also, this is another reason why I chose to make solstices and equinoxes the middle of their months--were the summer solstice the first day of summer, that would mean that most of Book 2, Aang's month of unconsciousness, and traipsing through the Fire Nation up 'til this point had all taken place within spring, which would make for a rather cramped timeline (especially with the month of unconsciousness).

Also, ignore the full moon shown when Zuko is sneaking into the Dragonbone Catacombs, provided you choose to believe that Zuko is learning about his family heritage at the same time as Aang. As the solstice is in the middle of the month, the day after a new moon, it should be a waxing crescent, and thus barely visible. You can also choose to believe that Aang and Zuko's plotlines are occurring at different times, thus allowing for a full moon in Zuko's case.

The Ember Island Players (9th month, day 5)

Assume the full moon seen when Aang tries to kiss Katara is not actually full and is a waning gibbous.

Sozin's Comet (The Phoenix King, The Old Masters, Into the Inferno, Avatar Aang) (9th month, days 8-11)

Not gonna lie--the entire finale is one giant headache when it comes to the timeline.

In the episode Roku's Temple, Roku told Aang that Sozin's Comet would return at the end of summer. Unfortunately, I could not find a way to make that happen without making the rest of the timeline impossibly cramped. Thus, instead of coming at summer's end, the comet comes closer to the middle of fall.

At the beginning of The Phoenix King, Zuko claims Sozin's Comet is only 3 days away. This calls for a complete and total disregard of the space-time continuum in order for everything to happen. You might want to tamper with the timeline and stretch it out to nearly a week, instead of a mere 3 days. Or we can just pretend the Space and Time spirits threw logic out the window for a few days. (Even if things are stretched out over a week, though, it'll still be pushing it. Appa getting from Ember Island to Ba Sing Se--nearly halfway across the world--in only a few days? Yeah...completely unrealistic.)

Avatar Aang (9th month)

Zuko's coronation can take place any time after the 11th.

The reunion at the Jasmine Dragon can occur any time afterwards, though would most likely be at least a month after Zuko's coronation, seeing as there was probably a lot of work to be done and it takes a while to get from the Fire Nation to Ba Sing Se.
